May 15-17th 2012 – Muzakarah Cendekiawan Shari’ah Nusantara (The Regional Shari’ah Scholars Dialogue) is an annual event that gathers prominent Shari’ah scholars from the ASEAN region, comprising Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Thailand. This year, the 6th Muzakarah Cendekiawan Shari’ah Nusantara (MCSN) was organized on the 15th, 16th and 17th of May, 2012 at Songket Hall, Rizqun International Hotel, Gadong, Brunei Darussalam together with the International Conference on Islamic Finance (ICIF2012).
This event was organised by the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) in collaboration with Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), and the Centre for Islamic Banking, Finance and Management (CIBFM), Brunei.
The objective of the dialogue is to enhance the existing collaborative efforts on Shari`ah matters and strengthen the framework for cooperation and harmonisation amongst Shari`ah scholars.
The three-day event was officiated by Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah. The event was attended by 150 invited delegates including academicians and representatives of Islamic finance institutions, Dewan Shariah Nasional of Majelis Ulama’ Indonesia, Singapore Islamic Scholars & Religious Teachers Association, Bank Islam of Brunei, and Muslim Cooperative Societies of Thailand, as well as students and staff of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and others. The theme of the 6th Muzakarah Cendekiawan Shari’ah Nusantara was “Garis Panduan Syariah dalam Aplikasi Ijarah Mausufah Fi Dhimmah dan Isu-Isu Pelaburan dalam Takaful’.
The first day of Muzakarah Cendekiawan Shariah Nusantara witnessed presentations by prominent speakers like, Ustaz Muhamad Ramadhan Fitri Elias and Awang Mohd Hairul Azrin Haji Besar for the first paper; then, for second paper Dr. Yulizar Sanrego Nz, Lokmanulhakim Hussain and Dr. Abdurrahman Raden Aji Haqqi. This was followed by a discussion by the representatives of each country, including Brunei and Thailand such as Dato Seri Setia Haji Metussin bin Haji Baki and Dr Maroning Salaming for both papers.
The second day’s discussion focused more on the practical aspects of investment in takaful in the industry. Papers were presented by expertise speakers like Prof Dr. Jaih Mubarok, Dr. Zakariya Hama, Dr Yasmin Hanani Mohd Safian, Wan Jemizan Wan Deraman,. Mohammad Mahbubi Ali and Puan Rokilah Abdul Samat. This was followed by commentaries on the papers by discussant’s such as Dr. H. Endy M. Astiwara,. Prof Dato’ Paduka Dr. Mahmood Zuhdi Hj. Abdul Majid and Puan Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohd Taib.
The session ended with six (6) resolutions that focused on the need to strengthen cooperation and develop a framework for Islamic finance among ASEAN Countries.
